25m Mulberry Bark Paper, Ink and Graphite, folded to be contained in Perspex box 50 x 45 x 17cm

The original ‘Line: Wymondham’ was made during a residency I undertook at Wymondham Abbey in Norfolk near to where I used to live and where I have strong personal familial connections. (See more details on the residency here)
The paper was laid out down the length of the Nave and a series of subconscious lines and marks were made whilst recalling the significant life points I had experienced in the building. This emotional and deeply personal process allowed for a moment to be caught on the paper – adding to the centuries of stories and events ‘held’ within the ancient building. I both added and took away at the point of making.

Following the making of the ‘Line’ I looked to capture the exact moment in which I had made the work in situ. The result is the contained, enveloped piece seen here – 25m of paper filed back and forth to form a flowing structure within the box. The gentle to-ing and fro-ing of the paper allows us to see the process of mark making within a contained space.

The images images are of the work when shown at my exhibition ‘Held’ in Wymondham Arts Centre, Beckett’s Chapel.
